The 369 Method Rules: Which Ones Are Real, and Which Were Made Up Online

The practice is short. The rule list that grew up around it is not — and most of it has no source.

The short answer

The rules that are actually part of the method

This is the whole list. Everything after it is optional folklore.

For the step-by-step routine, see /guides/how-to-do-the-369-method. For when in the day to place each round, see /guides/what-time-to-do-the-369-method.

Rules people believe that have no source

These circulate constantly. None of them is required by the practice.

Why the fake rules spread

Short-form video rewards specificity and confident delivery. A creator who says "use a blue pen" is more watchable than one who says "it doesn't matter". Repetition across creators turns a preference into an apparent rule.

No single person invented these, and no one needs to be dishonest for this to happen — it is what happens to folk practice at scale when there is no canonical authority. The modern 369 method emerged on TikTok around 2020; the absence of a source book is the point.

The rules that do matter, but aren't about the method

Attention matters more than procedure. Writing on autopilot, wording you don't believe, and treating the practice as a substitute for action will sink a cycle even if every folk rule is followed. See /guides/369-method-not-working and /guides/why-369-cycles-fail.

What about "the 369 rule"?

Some searches for "369 rule" want the manifestation practice. Some want Tesla's numerical fascination. Some are looking at unrelated uses of the number entirely — headphones, bowling drills, lottery systems, classroom exercises.

On this site, "369 rule" means the daily 3 · 6 · 9 repetition practice described above. For Tesla's actual relationship to the numbers — and what he did not teach — see /guides/nikola-tesla-369-method.

Common questions

What are the rules of the 369 method?
One present-tense intention, the same wording each day, three times in the morning, six in the afternoon, nine at night, for a cycle length you choose in advance. That is the real list. Pen colour, exact clock times, and restarting after a missed day are online add-ons without a source.
Does it matter what colour pen you use for the 369 method?
No. Specific pen colours circulate on social media as if they were required. They are not part of the practice. Use whatever you'll actually pick up three times a day.
Do you have to start over if you miss a day of the 369 method?
No. Carry on from the next morning and keep your count. The restart rule has no basis and is one of the most common reasons people abandon the practice. See /guides/missed-a-day-369-method.
Do you have to handwrite the 369 method?
No. Handwriting is traditional and slower — which can help attention — but speaking and typing also count. See /guides/speak-write-or-type-369-method.
Is there a rule about telling people what you're manifesting?
No required secrecy rule. Some people prefer privacy because talking about the goal becomes a substitute for practising it. That is preference, not method.
What is the "369 rule"?
Usually the manifestation practice of repeating one intention 3, 6 and 9 times a day. Sometimes people mean Tesla's interest in those numbers, which is a different topic. Unrelated uses of "369" also exist online.
